Hoi Nicolien,
Als je nog op zoek bent naar Arabische les in Nederland dan kan ik aanraden eens met Nayla te praten via www.leerarabisch.nl. Zij is Libanees en ik heb haar lessen altijd erg leuk gevonden!
Groeten, Erik

Dear D., I don't know why your answer would disappoint me? Of course learning a language depends for a large part on your own efforts. But if the people around you keep using French and English words you're not going to learn proper Arabic, and it doesn't really matter if they do that in Jordan as well. In Syria most people don't substitute Arabic words for English ones, and since this piece was written when Syria was still safe for foreigners, going to Syria was a better option. As for the Gulf, I don't know why you think they don't speak Arabic there? It's a different dialect, but it's as much Arabic as any other dialect...
And thanks for the tip, but I did/do have work and friends in Beirut. It's just that I prefer to have meaningful conversations with them, so these are exactly the people I DON'T speak Arabic with most of the time. Yes, I know that will slow down how quickly I learn the language. But luckily, this was a review of the INSTITUTIONS one can learn the language at in Beirut, not the people one hangs out with.
